One of the most special relationships your Go Girl! will have is the one she has with her dad. With many dads working long hours and girls with full calendars of activities, it can be a challenge finding time to spend together. To help build a better bond as a dad of daughters, we’d like to share 5 father-daughter activities our #Dadvocates and #GoGirls will enjoy! The following activities are focused in the Oakland area, but don’t let that stop you! Whether you are a dad, or a maddie (a mom that feels or identifies more like a daddy!) create your own adventures with your Go Girl! this Father's Day weekend...and beyond...
Take Her Dancing
What girl doesn’t like to dance? One of our favorite places is the Oakland Museum of California. Every Friday night, the Museum hosts Friday Nights @ OMCA with half-price admission, Off the Grid food trucks, live music, hands-on activities for kids, pop-up art market and more. June 30, our partner, Alphabet Rockers will be performing. They created two songs for Spotlight: Girls and will be performing one of them that night.
Take Her Hiking
If your girl loves nature, consider taking her for a hike Redwood Regional Park. The park offers all kinds of age-appropriate programs, activities and learning opportunities. Some of the activities include naturalist-led explorations, swimming, boating, and more. Check out the activities here.
Take Her Out for a Drink
One of our favorite spots in the Rockridge neighborhood of Oakland is the Golden Squirrel Restaurant, a family-friendly gastropub. The restaurant opened November 2016, taking the place of Barclay’s Pub, which had operated for close to 25 years. With the kid friendly menu and many tasty treats, your girl is sure to enjoy this spot as much as we do.
Take Her to Make Stuff
If you have yourself a crafty girl, we have the perfect spot for you to take her. The Museum of Children’s Art is any creative girl’s dream. It is a great, interactive space where children and their families create, connect and share through art.
Take Her to Catch a Game
For Go Girls who are sports fans, we highly recommend taking her to see a roller derby match. Did you know Oakland has five roller derby teams? The Bay Area Derby will host the Golden Bowl, June 16-18, three days of 9 WFTDA sanctioned games and 3 regulation games. Teams from Boston, Santa Cruz and Tampa, to name a few, will be in attendance.
Dads, we appreciate you and hope you enjoy these activities with your Go Girl! By letting your girl know she is valued and loved, you are creating a positive precedent for her future relationships. Here’s to raising confident, happy #GoGirls!
